All over social media you can see a bunch of quotes about 2018 being a year of blessings, a year of your dreams becoming a reality, a year of becoming the butterfly and so on. Everyone seems pumped about the new year and the possibilities (myself included), they've all started planning and believe that this year will be their year.
I love the positive energy and mentality but if your 2018 did not start that way and if the year does not unfold as you envision, that's okay! Life is a journey, it includes a variety of seasons and we don't all flourish and bloom at the same time.
There is a season to sow and there is a season to reap. There is absolutely nothing wrong with planting seeds and putting in the neccessary work in hope of getting to where you want to be. There is absolutely nothing wrong with going throgh life's challenges so that life can lead you to where you need to be.
You will experience trials and tribulations that play a very pivotal role in your journey. It may be heartbreaking, uncomfortable and painful but it all serves a purpose. One day you'll be up and the next you'll be down, life will seem like a never ending climb but let the struggle motivate you to work harder. The hard times teach you way more than the good times ever will. You will recognize your strength, learn more about who you truly are and hopefully be more appreciative of brighter days because you know what the darkness feels like.
Growth and the process is just as important as anything else. There is a season to become who you're meant to be internally and then there is a season where everything will start to thrive externally. Whenever you find yourself wallowing in self pity and feeling like the world is against you, quickly remind yourself that it's just not your season.
Also, don't compare yourself to others as this is very detrimental to the process. The funny thing is that we are always comparing ourselves to the unknown. The struggle is rarely shown, we don't see all of the seasons that people experience.
American actress, creator, director, producer and writer Issa Rae admitted that she thought she would be a millionaire by age 25. She came to the realization that she wasn't doing enough work to get there, she had to stop comparing herself to others and work at her own pace.
This is advice that we can all follow and live by. Unplug, take a social media break and constantly meditate on the words, "I am in competition with no one but the person I was yesterday. All things are working together for my good and what is for me will be for me."
When you make peace with the fact that life is a journey full of detours, you will have less breakdowns about not being where you think you should be. Issa Rae's dreams did not become a reality until 2016 when her series "Insecure" aired on HBO which basically took about 10 years.
She went through a season of disappointments, a season of hustling and making moves and then there was a season of her dreams coming into fruition. Stay the course and recognize that the present is a gift and opportunity to put in the necessary work. It's also an opportunity to work on yourself mentally, physically, spiritually and professionally. Most of us seem to have this belief that the world owes us something but it doesn't owe us a damn thing, you owe it to yourself to create the life you want.
This is the time to ask yourself the hard questions and determine whether you're doing enough and what more you can do. Make the best out of the opportunities you're given and learn as much as you can. There is always room for improvement and there is no limit to what you can do.
Take your time, don't rush your come up and accept the season you're in. Use this time to elevate yourself in every way possible.
