A few months ago, I received an amazing reaction to telling someone that I support myself. I work, pay bills, manage finances for groceries and savings. The response I received was “I worry for you…do you manage okay?” To which my response was “I have to.”
Real Life is Not A Fairytale.
Sometimes our lives don’t take the story book path of completing secondary school, having parents pay our way through University, completing a Masters, finding a great job, a great husband and purchasing a big house.
No, sometimes some of us have kids before finishing University, the love of our life turns out to be a stick man in foil paper instead of the perceived knight in shining armour. Sometimes our parents are less than supportive of our dreams and sometimes we work in places we would rather not to pay a few bills.
I'm saying all of this to say that it is important to trust YOUR process. Life may seem daunting when your story book perception of it fails and you may not be where you thought you would be at this age whether educationally, professionally, personally or socially but you will find that life is not so bad when you accept that THIS IS YOUR PORTION and YOU can make the best out of it.
Seek out the good in everything.
Had your kids before graduating? Great, you have one or two more persons celebrating you when you do graduate. Forced into paying bills at a young age while still under your family roof? Fantastic, you know what it means to manage money and not spend it on clothes every week. You live on your own at a time when you wish you didn’t have to? That’s okay, a little independence never hurt nobody!
It may be hard looking around at your peers who seem to be "living the life"...partying, travelling, flourishing in their professional career, studying or getting married but irrespective of what others are doing, you have to keep your eyes on your life and do not get distracted!
It is important to run your own race.
It's easy to get side tracked thinking that other peoples’ lives are easier or better than yours because they don’t have the responsibilities or “burdens” that you do.
That girl whose career you envy, she has struggled for years before she got her big break.
That girl who is constantly smiling, cries herself to sleep every night.
That guy who you wish you were, he has sacrificed many relationships and friendships to get to where he is and now, he feels more alone than anything.
That couple who you see on Instagram and consider #goals, they're unhappy and afraid to let go so they're just keeping up appearances.
The reality is that all of us have our own struggles and pain but we just deal with it differently and also conceal it. Never envy someone else's journey because you never know what they're going through or how much they had to endure to get to their current state.
With that being said, I have learnt to recognise that the love around me supersedes any perceived pain that I can imagine and it is my duty to look for the love and the small daily blessings surrounding me.
The sun burning my skin means that I can feel, the ZR blowing the horn means that I can hear, the co-worker disturbing a day's work with an incessant passing of air means that I can smell..do you see what I mean? Remember that David was appointed as King but had to go through a whole lot before that plan came to fruition.
Take Heart & Take Your Time
Flowers bloom at different times and seasons throughout the year but the length of time which it takes to bloom does not mean that it is no longer a flower. In the same manner that flowers bloom in various seasons so do our lives!
You may not be where you want to be today so pour a little more water into your root, let some sunlight in your life, close your eyes and feel the wind blow on your skin…trust YOUR process because your season is coming! You will get where you need to be if you do not GIVE UP.
Remember, the journey is just as important as the destination. The struggle is all apart of God's plan, have faith.
"For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." - Jeremiah 29:11
Slow progress is still progress. You are about to bloom :).
